Drop Zone

The Drop Zone.

Everybody needs one and everybody has one. It’s just that too many of us use a kitchen island, breakfast table or other area that just happens to be convenient to drop off keys, pocket change, the mail, cell phones, etc.

Design Basics introduced a different idea for Drop Zones in 2004 and incorporated the design concept into all our new home designs starting in 2007. Our drop zone provides a convenient, temporary spot to drop your purse, car keys, sort mail, park your briefcase or whatever else you may be carrying in to your home.

Typically, the drop zone consists of a base and upper cabinet that’s 36 inches wide. Eliminate unsightly clutter by putting in a cabinet near the entry from the garage to organize these things. Be sure to incorporate a recharging center for cell phones and other mobile devices. You may also want to add a tall space for hanging umbrellas, and a cork board or write-on board to turn this into a message center as well. Stress-free living includes knowing you’ll never lose your keys again and where your fully charged cell phone is when you leave the house!

The location of drop zones in our plans is in the rear entry foyers. As the most often used entrance into the home, coming in from the garage can no longer be viewed primarily as "utilitarian". The front entry foyer is designed to be something special, as much (or more!) attention should be paid to the rear foyer.
