10 Things You Need to Know Before Comparing New Homes by Their Cost Per Square Foot

You’ve seen it on carpet. You’ve seen it on grass –a flattened path revealing the shortest walking distance between any two points! Similarly, inside our house we naturally choose the shortest distance as we flow through and between rooms. Intelligently placed circulation paths are a major determining factor in how comfortably your new home will function.

Interior designer, David Ferguson, writer of the syndicated newspaper column, Creative Space, states, “In my experience, traffic flow is possibly the Number One hindrance to a good furniture arrangement.” Since poorly placed traffic paths generate irritation and can even create safety hazards, identifying, analyzing and improving circulation routes in your proposed floor plan during the planning process will ensure your creation of a calming, stress-reducing new home design!

Best selling home plans with drop zones

In 2007 Design Basics introduced and coined the term 'Drop Zones'. At that time, we started adding drop zones into rear-entry foyers in our plans. Since then each of our new home plans has included a drop zone in the rear-entry foyer. Many of those plans have turned into very popular plans. Here is the cream of the crop. New blog post - "You can control unwanted noise in your new home"

Not too long ago in our HER home Thought of the Day email series , we discussed controlling unwanted noise in the home. Your feedback confirmed this is a hot topic so we'll look deeper at reducing noise from within the home, starting with sounds that originate within an area.

Ever walk into an empty house for sale? Sounds echo as sound waves bounce back and forth against hard surfaces (flooring, walls, windows, ceilings). Materials such as rugs, carpet and carpet pad, upholstered, padded furniture and soft, lined window coverings help absorb sound.

I decided to try a different tack. I looked at the most popular designs from five home plan services. . .

Our own Paul Foresman was quoted about what Design Basics home buyers are looking for in new home design.

Designers know natural light is one of the most important elements of home design because daylight dramatically affects our perceptions of size and color. While the light bulb is a wonderful thing, electric lighting cannot offer even illumination throughout a room and different light bulbs produce very different hues which change the appearance of your home.

We are drawn to natural light. Public areas in your home bathed in sunlight are perceived to be “welcoming” and “cheery”, private spaces “ safe” and “serene”. Being a yoga enthusiast, I whole-heartedly agree—daylight just makes us feel good! Sunlight’s health benefits are well documented: from Vitamin D production, lower blood pressure, and . . .
